Opel was first known as a leader in European sewing machine sales, later as the largest automaker in Germany that’s the fate of Adam Opel GmbH or more commonly known as Opel.
It was in 1863 when the Opel Company was founded by Adam Opel, who is known for producing various household goods and sewing machines. The founder died in 1895 while his company was at its success—a leader in sewing machine sales and capable of producing more than 2,000 bicycles every year. But the company continued its operation with Adam’s successor and started getting involved with automobile industry.
Opel made agreements with other automakers like Lutzmann and Darracq just to be able to go into the automobile business. It was in 1906 when the company produced its own car design and stopped making cars with Darracq. The decision of Opel proved to be acceptable with the target consumers. But a great fire disaster ruined the main factory which was founded in 1911. Fortunately, Opel never saw that disaster as a great curse because that led them to creating a new factory with better facilities. This time, they focused on creating cars, motorcycles, and bicycles and dropped manufacturing of sewing machines. In 1913, Opel regained what was lost when it became the largest car maker in Germany.
Today, Adam Opel GmbH still exists but under the General Motors Corporation and it still has its reputation as the GM’s largest European brand.
