The Austin Motor Company was one of the British automotive industries that produced cars, military vehicles, taxis, ambulances, and aircrafts.

Austin Company was founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin or Sir Herbert who was also the former manager of Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company. The first 200 manufactured cars was a conventional 5-liter four cylinder model. During the World War 1, Austin Company expanded extremely because of its government contracts that dealt with artillery and aircraft.

Over the years, be it pre-war years, the war years, and the post war years Austin had never failed to take part. During the World War II Austin remained manufacturing trucks and aircrafts and the Lancaster bombers of the 617 squadron branded as Dambusters was one of these. In 1952, Austin put itself to an agreement with Japan’s Nissan Motor Company where 2000 Austins were sold in Japan but eventually Japan used the exclusive rights given by Austin in creating the Austin A50, entirely Nissan-built and was only marketed in Japan.

Though turbulence struck Austin the following years, the Austin Rover era with its Austin Metro hit the market and the buyers. It became a total hit and one of the most famous cars in UK in 1980. However under the Rover Group, Austin manufactured cars became marquee-less and was simply branded as Rovers until the end.
