History - Edsel

The Edsel name had such a very short run in the automobile industry. It was a division of Ford and it was formed mainly to replace Lincoln when it was promoted to serve the upper market. There were no real big reasons for its failure except that this line of cars came out at a wrong time. Edsel cars were quite up for speed but it required premium gas. Since it was introduced in 1958 just following the 1957 recession what the people really wanted and needed was something more economical. The fact that management did not really give it much support also did not help.
Nevertheless, such a car now has much value for vintage car lovers. Having been sold in small number acquiring one now would be a real treat. Getting one in good condition would surely complete a sports car hobbyist’s collection. An Edsel in mint condition would be marketable now than it ever was before. Its design is now much more appreciated and many of its then impractical features are now quite standard in today’s sports car.
