History - DeSoto

We have DeSoto used cars by owner for sale at bargain prices.

DeSoto was founded by Walter Chrysler and manufactured by Chrysler Corporation mainly for the purpose of competing with close competitors like the General Motors, Willy-Knight and Studebaker in the middle priced car market. It’s even said that had Chrysler acquired Dodge earlier, DeSoto would not have come to being. Chrysler continued to produce both DeSoto and Dodge cars, with DeSoto having the lower price. DeSoto continued its good sales and its popularity around 1932. The following year DeSoto was priced in front of Dodge. Its Airflow designs were not as well embraced in its introduction though.

DeSoto is widely popular for its pop-up headlights. DeSoto was the first North American car to have this in mass produced automobiles. To everyone then it was known as “Air Foil” lights. These models were marketed to have lights that were “out of sight except at night.”
DeSoto had so many memorable and popular models until around the year 1956. The following models were poorly accepted. The economy did not help as well. Sales dwindled leading to the downfall of DeSoto as a brand in 1960.
